Small Stream Fishing In The San Juan Mountains

The upper streams of the San Juan River within the San Juan National Forest offer a vastly different experience from the well-known tailwaters of the San Juan in New Mexico. These pristine creeks and streams originate just miles above our fishing spots, fed by snowmelt from 12,000 to 13,000-foot peaks that often hold snow well into June. This snowpack supplies cold, clear water to the San Juan River, Piedra River, and Navajo River, eventually flowing into Navajo Reservoir and onward to the famed tailwaters below.

We hold permits to guide fly fishing trips on several public streams in the San Juan National Forest, including the West and East Forks of the San Juan River, Wolf Creek, Turkey Creek, Upper Piedra, and Rio Blanco. These waters often require some hiking—sometimes quite a bit—but the effort is well worth it. The streams are well-suited for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

Access to most fishing areas is by foot or occasionally by 4-wheeler. The trout here, averaging 8 to 15 inches, are eager for dry flies and dry-dropper rigs, making these waters an excellent place for beginners to refine their dry fly presentation and for experienced anglers to enjoy consistent action.
